About HSE International Summer University

Summer University at HSE is a new initiative designed to provide students, PhD candidates, post-docs and professionals from around the world with unique opportunities to enhance their knowledge in area studies and beyond. Offering a broad interdisciplinary selection of courses, the Summer University is open to all students and will be of particular interest to those who study International Relations, History, Political Science and other social sciences and humanities. Many of the courses, taught in English, focus on the politics, history, economics, and culture of Russia and Eurasia.

About the Course

The main purpose of the course is to provide international students with a basic knowledge of International Human Rights Law, focusing on the principal international and regional legal instruments for the protection and the promotion of fundamental human rights and freedoms, as well as addressing the international judicial and quasi-judicial human rights bodies at the universal level and the ECHR.
After a short overview of the historical development of IHRL, the first part of the course will focus on the UN treaties and bodies for the protection of human rights.

The second part of the course will be dedicated to the study of the regional systems of protection of human rights. In particular, the course analyzes the European Convention on Human Rights and the rights protected therein, such as the right to life, the prohibition of torture, inhumane and degrading treatments, the right to liberty, the right of the fair trial, the right to an opinion and to freedom of speech, the right to family as well as the prohibition of discrimination etc. Finally, the course will explain the methods of international judicial and quasi-judicial human rights bodies at the universal and regional levels.
