In order to encourage further research that determines how effective certain policies are in realising the goals of law the centre initiated the Annual Essay Completion on Law & Society in 2016. The Centre hereby invites essays for the 5th GNLU Essay Competition 2020 organized under the able guidance of Prof. Upendra Baxi and in collaboration with reputed firms and organizations such as L&L Partners (formerly Luthra), Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), Centre for Social Justice and Niti Manthan.

Theme

“Issues and Challenges during and post the Global Pandemic: Possible Reform, Strategies and Solutions”

The following sub-themes have been identified as requiring academic consideration in this context:

  • Economics in the time of a global pandemic
  • Justice in the time of COVID-19
  • Decoding the legal framework for pandemic control
  • Mental Health and wellness
  • The validity of the use of force against violators of lockdown
  • Impact and role of mass media during the pandemic
  • Effectiveness of public health communication to create psychological resources for developing resilience
  • Reduction of stigma, prejudice, discrimination, and inequalities
  • Privacy v. Health. To what extent Privacy can be renounced?
  • Shelter Homes and Safety of Children amidst the lockdown
  • Need for reform in Education during the lockdown

Eligibility

  • The 5th GNLU Essay Competition 2020 is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in any discipline in a recognized University/ College/ Institute in India.
  • Co-authorship by a maximum of 2 students is permitted.

Submission Guidelines

  • The essays should be the original work of the authors. Any kind of plagiarism will lead to disqualification.
  • The essays published elsewhere or selected/ submitted for publication elsewhere shall be disqualified.
  • The word limit for the essay is 4500 – 6000 words, not including footnotes.
  • The essays should be typed in: Times New Roman, Font Size 12 and Line Spacing 1.5.
  • The footnotes must be typed in: Times New Roman, Font Size 10 and Line Spacing 1.
  • The margins should be 1” or 2.54 cm on all sides.
  • All text should be justified.
  • Every citation must follow the Harvard Bluebook, 20th Edition.
  • Submissions shall be assessed as per the criteria and weightage of marks (total: 100 marks) as specified:
    1. Understanding of the Theme and the Sub-themes (10)
    2. Quality of Research (30)
    3. Originality and Creativity (10)
    4. Language, Grammar and Style (15)
    5. Organization, Structure and Clarity of Expressions (20)
    6. Quality and Viability of Suggestions or Recommendations made (15)

Submission Procedure

  • The essays must be sent by email to gcls@gnlu.ac.in with the subject ‘5th GNLU Essay Competition on Law and Society, 2020’.
  • The body of the e-mail must specify the name(s) of the author(s).
  • The participants are required to send the following details in a separate​ word document attached to the e-mail:
    Sub-theme Chosen
    Title of the Essay
    Name of the author(s), College/Institute/University of author(s), programme enrolled, and year of study of author(s)
    E-mail address and contact no. of author(s)​
    The essay may be attached in ‘.doc’ or ‘.docx’ format.

Important Rules

  • There is no requirement of registration formalities to be completed in order to participate in the competition. No registration fee is to be paid for the same.
  • All original essays submitted for this competition shall become the sole property of Gujarat National Law University (“GNLU”). GNLU shall have the right to publish the entries in the form of a journal or a book.
  • The decision of the Jury shall be final and binding.
  • All matters related to the internships shall be subject to the convenience of the concerned organization.
  • GNLU Centre for Law and Society (“GCLS”) possesses the right to reject entries which do not conform to the Guidelines for Submission.
  • GCLS reserves the absolute rights to cancel, defer, or postpone indefinitely, the competition in the event of the accruing of any incident, natural or man-made.
  • In case of any dispute, the decision of GCLS shall be final and binding. 

Important Dates

  • Date of Announcement: Wednesday, October 14, 2020
  • Last Date for Submission of Essays: November 29, 2020  
  • Results: Within two months from the Last Date for Submission of Essays (Tentatively)
