Even when a student has the potential to shine, financial shackles stop them from moving forward. Studying law in India is expensive in itself, therefore pursuing higher education abroad is not affordable for a majority of Indians. So here are a few of the best scholarships to help you get into your dream university.

UK Universities

Commonwealth Scholarship (For students from Commonwealth Countries)

Programs covered: Master’s Degree (one year) and PhD (three years) at UK Universities.

  • It covers almost all the fields including Engineering and Technology, Science, Agriculture, Humanities, and Social Science.
  • Scholarship amount: travel expenses, tuition fees, and other allowances for the enrolled program only (amount variable). 
  • 25 to 30 slots of scholarships are available.
  • For Masters, the availability duration will be 1 year, and for PhD programmes, it will be 3 years.

Eligibility Criteria

(for Masters):  

  • Age below 40 years. 
  • A minimum score of 60% in Social Science with a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Not already registered for the Master’s course elsewhere.  
  • They need to have tertiary education in English medium.
  • Should not be a recipient(s) of other British Council scholarships. 
  • Applications of candidates who are already living abroad are not eligible.

(for PhD.):  

  • Age below 40 years. 
  • A minimum score of 60% in Social Science. 
  • Have a master’s degree or is in the final year 
  • Not already applied for a PhD or MPhil elsewhere 
  • Need to have tertiary education in English medium.
  • Should not be a recipient(s) of other British Council scholarships 
  •  Need to obtain an offer of acceptance from a potential supervisor of his/her chosen University, which is mandatory at the time of interview rather than application.
  • Applications of candidates who are already living abroad are not eligible.

Application Process

  • Submit through your country’s National Nominating agency. 
  • Documents to submit – Copy of passport, academic transcripts, admission letter of a UK university, Proof of exams to study in the UK.
  • The nominated candidates need to take the IELTS by contacting the local British Council Office.

  • The Education Ministry issues notification around the month of August to September every year. 

Harding International Legal Scholarship (For all International Applicants)

  • Programs covered: LLM at the University of Birmingham.
  • Scholarship amount: £5,000 per year. 

Eligibility

  • Should be able to pay tuition fees which are not covered by this scholarship.
  • Need to provide evidence of having sufficient competence in English. 
  • Must be self-funding to cover the living cost and associated visa/travel expenses.
  • Should have applied via the website’s course page on the Birmingham LLM section.
  • Should be ready to study at the Birmingham campus in Edgbaston.

Application Process

  • Must have completed an application to study.
  • Fill up the online application form.
  • Support your application with two references.

Scholarships for Law Students

The Chevening Scholarship  (For all International Applicants)

  • Programs covered: 1 year Master’s Degree in any subject at UK Universities.
  • Scholarship amount: a variable which includes –
    – University tuition fees
    – monthly stipend
    – travel costs to and from the UK
    – arrival allowance
    – homeward departure allowance
    – cost of one visa application
    – travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK. 

Eligibility

  • citizen of a Chevening-eligible country, return to your country for a minimum of two years after the award has ended, have completed a UG degree by the time you submit your application.
  • Need to provide evidence of having sufficient competence in English. 
  • have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience, have received an offer from the 3 choices by 15 July 2021  
  • didn’t previously study in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship.  
  • The chosen course must be: full-time 

Application Timeline

  • Begins in August.
  • The submission deadline is in November.
  • Scholarship Interviews take place between March and May.
  • Final decisions are announced in mid-June.

Application Process

  • The application form is country-specific.
  • Applications can be made to any 3 UK universities that have been covered by the Chevening Program.

Sussex India Scholarship (For Indian Nationals)

  • Programs covered: Masters course in any subject at the University of Sussex. 
  • Scholarship amount: £3,000. An unlimited number of scholarships are available. 

Eligibility

  • Indian national.
  • classified as overseas for fee purposes. 
  • self-financing student.
  • Need to provide evidence of having sufficient competence in English. 
  • He/she was offered to study an eligible Masters course at Sussex in September 2021. 

Application Process

  • Apply before registering via Postgraduate Application System.
  • Declare interest in the scholarship via Postgraduate Application System.
  • If applied via one of their overseas representatives, ask them to do this on your behalf, only one University can be accepted through a Sussex scholarship.

Henry Arthur Hollond Studentship in Law (For all International Applicants)

  • Programs covered: full-time LLM degree at the University of Cambridge. 
  • Scholarship amount: minimum value: £23000 and maximum value: £42000. (value will vary as per circumstances and fee liability) (1 Year based on academic merit). (Gives funding for fees and living costs.) 

Eligibility

  • Should enrol for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Faculty of Law.
  • Need to provide evidence of having sufficient competence in English. 
  • Research areas should be in law. 
  • The application window opens around October and remains open till January. The results are declared around March.

Application Process

  • Register on the official website and enter personal, academic, & application details. 
  • Provide the number sent to you before submitting the Studentship application. 
  • Mention two referees and upload supporting documents. 
  • Receipt of applications will be acknowledged by email.

USA, Canada and EU Universities

Tata Scholarship – Cornell University (For Indian Citizens)

  • Programs covered: Scholarship for UG law students at Cornell University.
  • Scholarship amount: Up to $25 million annually. 20 scholarships are available.  

Eligibility

  • An Indian citizen who has attended secondary school in India.
  • Should be offered admission to Cornell for a UG program.
  • Need to provide evidence of having sufficient competence in English. 
  • Must be eligible for need-based financial aid. 

Application Process

  • Candidates need to complete the College Scholarship Service (CSS)profile.
  • Must complete two application forms before the deadline along with important documents.
  • The scholarship form will be accessible to the students from November 2020 to Mar 31, 2021. 
  • The shortlisted candidate is released on the and hence the students after applying should consistently look at the official portal of Cornell University for the released list of shortlisted candidates.

Fulbright Fellowships for Indian Citizens (For Indian Citizens)

  • Programs Covered: Master’s Degree, Doctoral Research, Post-Doctoral Research.
  • This scholarship is for Indian students with leadership skills willing to study in US Universities.
  • Scholarship Amount: It covers tuition, living allowance, J-1 visa support, accidents and sickness.

Eligibility

Following are the eligibility criteria for the scholarship:

  • Need to provide evidence of having sufficient competence in English. 
  • Must have an equivalent of US’ bachelor’s degree
  • Should score at least 55% marks in the bachelor’s degree
  • Needs a 3-year work experience in leadership and community service.

Application Process

For the application process, the candidates need to:

  • Submit their transcripts.
  • Show their English language test score.
  • Submit three letters of recommendations.
  • Include personal statement
  • Submit their objective for studying in that University or Choosing that score.

The Law Foundation of Nova Scotia Scholarships (For all International Applicants)

  • Programs covered: students entering the Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University. 
  • Scholarship amount: $21,500 

Eligibility

  • Superior academic average  
  • degree of B.A., B.Sc., or B.Com., or an equivalent degree at Dalhousie or another degree-granting college or university recognized by the Senate of Dalhousie University.
  • Need to provide evidence of having sufficient competence in English. 

Application Process

  • Fill up the online application form available.
  • No additional documents required.
  • No word limit to the statements to be written in the application form.

Holland Scholarship at University of Groningen (For all International Applicants)

  • Programs covered: LLM in Energy and Climate Law, European Economic Law, Global Criminal Law, International Commercial Law, International Human Rights Law, Public International Law, Governance and Law in Digital Society (Campus Fryslân). 
  • Scholarship amount: €5,000 as living costs 

Eligibility

  • Not holding the nationality of one of the EEA countries. 
  • Need to provide evidence of having sufficient competence in English. 
  • not have a degree from an educational institution in the Netherlands.
  • excellent grades during your bachelor/undergraduate studies. 
  • meet the specific requirements of the University of Groningen.
  • having a letter from the University of Groningen with an admission offer.

  • Apply after receiving an admission offer from University of Groningen.

General Scholarship for Indians 

Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarships 

  • Programs covered: Master’s Degree and PhD.
  • Scholarship amount: max USD 100,000.

Eligibility Criteria

  • residing in India for at least six months.
  • Should be within the age of 30 years.
  • Hold a first-class undergraduate degree from a recognized university in India
  • International university graduates have to stay in India for two years before applying.
  • Have fulfilled all the admission requirements of the chosen coursework.
  • Need to provide evidence of having sufficient competence in English. 
  • Does not hold a master’s degree from an international university.
  • Must not have already begun a postgraduate degree course abroad at the time of application.

Application Process

  • Fill up the application form and submit the required documents along with it.
  • Verify all the information before submitting the application. 
  • Appear for the preliminary interview stage.
  • If selected candidates are sent to the final interview round.
